Clinical Interests for Referring Providers: Clinical Care of Children with Diabetes, Clinical/Epidemiologic Research in Diabetes Complication including Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors, Diabetic Kidney Disease, Clinical Trials
Research Interest for Referring Providers: Dr. Maahs’ current research focus is on the prevention of complications in persons with diabetes mellitus. His NIDDK sponsored K23 is titled: “DK075360, “Cardiovascular Disease in Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus: Young Adults to Adolescents.” Currently, he is working as part of the Coronary Artery Calcification in Type 1 Diabetes (CACTI) Study with Dr. Marian Rewers as mentor. In this study he is focusing on cardiovascular and kidney complications in young adults with type 1 diabetes. In the pediatric population, he is collaborating with Dr. Paul Wadwa on a CTRC protocol "Determinants of Macrovascular Disease in Youth with Type 1 Diabetes," investigating cardiovascular disease risk factors in children with type 1 diabetes and non-diabetic controls and a sub-study of periodontal health in these children with Dr. Elaine Morrato. He is also PI on a clinical trial of lipid-lowering medications in dyslipidemic youth with type 1 diabetes. Additionally, Dr. Maahs is working with Dr. Dana Dabelea as part of the SEARCH for Diabetes in Youth Study on early kidney disease, glycemic control, and dyslipidemia in children with diabetes. He is also collaborating with Dr. Elizabeth Mayer-Davis at the University of North Carolina on a pilot project utilizing currently available technology to investigate dietary and physical activity on glycemia and a second project to investigate novel technology to improve diabetes care in underserved populations. He is the local PI on a JDRF funded trial of a rapid acting insulin in collaboration with Dr. Bruce Buckingham at Stanford. Dr. Maahs' general research goal is to do research that will help us to understand and prevent the complications of diabetes in children and young adults and to improve their diabetes care. To improve his research methodology skills he also completed a PhD in Epidemiology at the Colorado School of Public Health in May 2010.
