Information for Referring Providers
Clinical Interests for Referring Providers: Epidemiology/etiology of type I diabetes, including investigations of the geographic and temporal variability in the incidence of the disease, and of the natural history of beta-cell autoimmunity in newborns and infants from the general population and in very young relatives of type I patients. Epidemiology/etiology of cardiovascular complications of both type I and type II diabetes, and of insulin resistance in type II diabetes. Epidemiology/etiology of celiac disease.

Research Interest for Referring Providers: Dr. Rewers' primary research has been in the area of etiology and epidemiology of type 1 diabetes as well as insulin resistance and cardiovascular complications of diabetes. Dr. Rewers is the principal investigator of large NIH-funded prospective cohort studies: the Diabetes Autoimmunity Study in the Young (NIDDK/NIAID), The Environmental Determinants of Diabetes in the Young (TEDDY), the Coronary Artery Calcification in Type 1 (CACTI) Study (NHLBI), and the Genetic and Environmental Causes of Celiac Disease (NIDDK). In the past, he has directed The Insulin Resistance Atherosclerosis Study (IRAS) and The IRAS Family Study. He serves as the Clinical Investigation & Bioinformatics Core director for the UC Denver Diabetes Endocrinology Research Center (DERC). In 2000, Dr. Rewers initiated a study of early detection of heart disease in 1,400 adult patients with type 1 diabetes and their spouses/partners. The Coronary Artery Calcification in Type 1 (CACTI) Study The study is using electron beam computed tomography in detecting microscopical calcification of coronary arteries. This powerful tool will be used to better define the genetic and metabolic causes of heart disease that is the underlying cause of death in nearly 80% of patients with type 1 diabetes.
