Research Interest for Referring Providers
I am a physician-scientist who finds synergies between direct care of patients, operations, and health policy research. I am the Division Head for Cardiology and Chair of the Cardiovascular Clinical Outcomes Governance Group for UCHealth, which allow me to understand clinical care operations and health care delivery from the ground level. I am also Co-Director of the Colorado Program for Patient Centered Decisions at the University of Colorado, exploring how patients understand and engage their health care decisions. My interests include anticipating progression into end-stage heart failure (advanced Stage D) and then helping patients make tough choices regarding invasive therapies and palliative options. I lead the PCORI-funded DECIDE-LVAD trial on patient decision support and the AHA-funded EPIC-HF trial on patient engagement in medication prescribing. These concepts are now being implemented in the I-I-CAPTAIN trial, a large Dissemination project funded by PCORI across 5 health systems (Yale, Northwestern, UCHealth, University of Utah, and Sutter Health) to understand implementation and effectiveness of tools to overcome treatment inertia in heart failure management.
